“My work is made up of accidents, little slips, forays, and intervals. My work comes in and out of bed. I try not to do anything, until such a time as I look at what I’ve got, and I try out a way of complicating our relationship. I like confetti, because to make it work you have to throw everything up in the air. After all, it’s just a question of points of view, and probably everything is going well in some other place. Perhaps the same sun that I saw four hours ago, and that I can’t see any longer, is now warming you up. I’ve always wondered why films make people cry, and exhibitions don’t. I’ve read that, up until the 19th century, paintings could move people to tears. So, before the arrival of moving images. What happened next? I’m going to take a stroll: one thing, amongst the various other things. As if every day of one’s life had to have a meaning.”

On the occasion of Arte Fiera Bologna 2022 Renata Fabbri is pleased to present a solo show by the artist Serena Vestrucci (Milan, 1986). Exhibited in the booth, is a selection of new and recent pictorial and sculptural works, which illustrate the artist’s rich and polyandric research based on contrapositions and recollections, conceptual alterations and perceptive illusions.
Delving into the interstice of everyday experience and taking inspiration from unexpected encounters with common objects, Serena Vestrucci’s works question and manipulate the ordinary through the use of multiple artistic processes and linguistic paradoxes, aimed at surprising and triggering short-circuits. Drawn to objects, situations, images and material belonging to everyday life, the artist makes them the main subject and material of the artistic experience. Modified and translated into fields of actions different from their original ones, Vestrucci focuses on the latter, changing their perception and filling them with new meanings through instantaneous and illusory poetics, slightly visible and apparently simple.
The resulting works, in their visual immediacy and intriguing formal directness, subvert the perception of the artwork, modifying the semantic value and, at the same time, inviting us to rethink the way we observe and interpret what surrounds us. Invested with a subtle irony towards the contemporary, Serena Vestrucci’s works dig into the obviousness of small things, giving voice to what is often hidden, forgotten or put aside. Through a naive and playful language, which is at the same time blunt and provocative, Vestrucci raises the misconception as the necessity for more careful and deep understanding of reality.

Digging into the crevices of everyday experience and inspired by chance encounters with common objects, the works of Serena Vestrucci (b. Milan, 1986) interrogate and transform the ordinary through a diverse range of artistic processes and linguistic paradoxes. Fascinated by artefacts, situations, images, and materials picked out from everyday life (such as flags, pastels, fried squid, seasonal fruit), the artist turns these elements into the subject and raw material of her artistic experience. By modifying them and shifting them into fields of action different from their original context, Vestrucci draws attention to them, changing their appearance and filling them with new meanings, in an instantaneous and illusory poetics, barely visible and yet only apparently simple.
The outcome are works that, in their visual immediacy, subvert the perception of the work of art, changing its semantic value and inviting the viewer to rethink the way they observe and interpret their surroundings. After obtaining a BA from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, Vestrucci moved to Venice, where in 2011 was awarded a residency at the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation’s ateliers, and in 2013 obtained an MA in Design and Production of the Visual Arts at the IUAV University of Venice.
